History quiz

“Quizz Histoire Eco” – what is it? A game available on internet and a mobile application, launched in November 2014 in partnership with the magazine “Historia”, for anyone interested in the history of banking and the economy. Do you know about the history of the ancestors of BNP Paribas?

About the Comptoir d’escompte

Let’s take one of the founding banks of the group, the Comptoir national d’escompte de Paris (CNEP): did you know that its creation was supported by leading French publishers? In fact it opened in 1848 thanks to provisions from bookseller publishers such as Louis Hachette and the Firmin-Didot brothers.

Le Comptoir – for a time it was Comptoir d’escompte de Paris (CEP) – was the first French bank to build a network of international branches even before opening any branches in the provinces. Its branches in Shanghai and Calcutta were opened in 1860 whereas the first provincial branch in France was only opened in 1867, in Nantes.

About Paribas

Where does the name Paribas come from? It is the contraction of “Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas”, an entity created in 1872 following the merger of the Banque de Paris and the Banque de crédit et de dépôt des Pays-Bas. For their communications and money transfers by telegraph, the banks used acronyms: Paribas designated the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas. This practical diminutive slowly established itself and was officially adopted in 1982! It was this same Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas which, at the end of the 18th century, in association with the Société générale de Belgique, participated in the financing of one of the biggest projects of that era, and which was completed in 1905, namely the 1,200 km of track for the Peking-Hankou railway.
